A battery charger is a device used to put energy into a rechargeable battery by forcing an electric current through it.
The charging protocol depends on the size and type of the battery being charged, it follows a 3-stage charging scheme:
- The first stage is referred to as “bulk”; the charging current will be held high and constant and is limited by the capacity of the charger.
- When the voltage on the battery reaches its outgassing voltage the charger switches to the second stage, the “absorption” stage and the voltage is therefore held constant.
- In this third stage called the “float” stage, the charging current is very small. At this voltage the battery can be maintained at full charge and compensate for self-discharge.
To choose the ideal charger for your battery, you must first select the right input voltage (120V,230V etc...) and a suitable charging current. It should be at about 15~20% of your battery capacity for lead batteries (e.g. for a 100 Ah battery, an appropriate charging current would be 20 A). You can go up to 30% for Lithium batteries with a compatible charger.
